A Train for Europe in the 50's and 60's.
In 1990, the German Federal Railways (DB) and Eisenbahn Video set forth to produce an extraordinary documentary of the fast passenger diesel train, VT 601. The result of their efforts is this magnificent video which shows a rail service that, at one time, was a daily connection between 18 of Europes mayor cities. In the summer of 57, when first introduced, the VT 601 linked Dortmund - Ostende, Hamburg - Zurich, Frankfurt - Amsterdam and Dortmund - Paris with first class only passenger service. And what a service and luxury it offered: From the exotic wood paneling and special soundproofing to the outstanding gourmet service in the dining car. This futuristic train was, in its time, a fierce competitor to automobile and airplane.
By the fall of 1972, this beautiful red and beige streamlined train had completed itâs regular service. However, in 1990, the VT 601 again became the link between two of Germany's largest cities, Hamburg and Berlin. But this time it was during a two month stint of regular service while under lease to the German Reichsbahn (East German Railways) .
This fine video production presents beautiful sights along the main lines Europe in the 50's and 60's .
