The Cuban Connection
Immediately after President Kennedy’s assassination on November 22, 1963, the FBI dispatched a high-ranking agent to Mexico City to investigate Lee Harvey Oswald’s activities there a few weeks earlier. However, only three days later, newly sworn-in president Lyndon B. Johnson abruptly called off the investigation. FBI agent Lawrence Keenan was ordered back to Washington and sworn to lifelong secrecy in this matter.
The reason for Johnson’s swift action (as told by Alexander Haig): He suspected Fidel Castro to have played a role in the assassination. He reasoned that if the American people were ever to find out the truth about the involvement of arch-enemy Castro, there would be chaos all over the United States and an immediate call for war. Furthermore, Johnson feared that in case of war the Democrats would not become electable for years to come.
42 years later, well-known German historian, author & film maker Wilfried Huismann, together with retired FBI agent Keenan went on a fact-finding trip to Mexico.
Their goal: to trace back the trail of the halted investigation four decades earlier. Their journey proved successful. They located a number of witnesses that had not been interrogated at the time nor since then. One such witness was Oscar Marino, then lead investigating agent of the Cuban Secret Service G-2. He agreed to an interview and confirmed Huismann’s theory that Oswald was not a fanatic psychopath but Fidel Castro’s willing tool in Cuba’s deadly duel with arch-enemy John F. Kennedy.
The many years of research for this film also yielded incriminating insights into the secret service files of both, the Russian KGB and the Mexican DFS. Equally revealing was the discovery of a number of secretly recorded phone conversations originating from inside the Cuban Embassy in Mexico City .
Of the many interviewed witnesses presented in this one-of-a-kind historical film drama the following „heavyweights“ stand out:
Alexander Haig & Joseph A. Califano
(both trusted confidants of Johnson).
Sam Halpern (Robert F. Kennedy’s man at the CIA.
In charge of planning the assassination of Castro)
General Fabián Escalante
(former Chief of Cuban SS Agency G-2)
Narrated in 3 Languages: English, Spanish, German
120 Minutes
