The silent, lofty, white world of the Glaciers – seeing this icy cold beauty is indeed an unforgettable experience on the Glacier Express, one of Switzerland’s most famous and popular attractions.
St. Moritz, almost 6,000 feet above sea level, is the starting point of our journey across the Swiss Alps designation Zermatt, 180 miles away. Just outside St. Moritz, the train leaves the upper Engadin and after passing through the Albula Tunnel it merges into the Albula Valley. Here, the track branches off to Davos and at Thusis it reaches the Hinterrhein. The largest community along the route is Chur, capital of Graubünden.
We approach the Vorderrhein in a westerly direction, here begins the steep climb up to the Oberalp Pass, highest point on the route.
Through the impressive Furka Basis Tunnel we reach the Upper Rhone Valley. The Glacier Express follows through via Brig onto Visp where we turn to the south. At the far end of the romantic Matter Vista Valley lies our destination, Zermatt.
