Summer 1957. Since the death of his wife, boatswain Acki Lüders has lived with his young daughter at his mother-in-law’s - distraught and torn between a longing for life at sea and the responsibility for his child. His friend Ewald pays him a visit on his way to Hamburg Harbor, from where he will be travelling to Buenos Aires as chief mate on the cargo-carrier and school sailing ship PAMIR to load 4000 tons of barley deemed for Germany. Ewald manages to persuade his friend to join him and secures him a job as boatswain on the PAMIR. Captain Lewerenz awaits them on board. Major differences of opinion during the outward journey regarding the training of the 45 young cadets consistently lead to disputes between the two friends and the captain.
Upon their arrival in Buenos Aires, the local harbor workers are on strike. The PAMIR cannot be loaded. Every day the ship has to stay anchored costs money. Finally, the captain yields to the shipping company’s pressure and allows his own men to load the PAMIR with the barley as bulk cargo - including even the deep tank, which is normally filled with ballast water. Acki and Ewald are in doubt regarding the stability of the ship with this dangerous ballast allocation. But they are unable to prevent the PAMIR putting to sea.
During the return voyage they receive an alarming radio message: hurricane “Carrie” is heading directly for their ship. Shortly afterwards, the PAMIR pitches heavily to one side, causing the 4000 tons of barley below deck to shift alarmingly. The German four-master is in imminent danger of sinking, taking the 86 seamen down to the depths with it. Acki and some of the cadets manage to reach the wreck of one of the lifeboats, but only a few of the young apprentices can endure the lengthy physical and mental exertion. Just six survivors return to the port of Hamburg...
