This exciting journey along the tracks of one of the worldâs largest train countries presents the vastness of India from a new perspective.
Every day about 15 million Indians depend on trains for transportation, leaving the camel as second-place competitor in the dust. With holy monkeys on the tracks and non-paying passengers on top of the trains, timetables are an enigma in India. Much of the rail system is a remnant of the English colonial past. Instead of pulling their cars, these locomotives could just as well be on display at the starting point of our excursion: the world-famous Railroad Museum in Dehli, which boasts of such unusual exhibits as a one-track German train and tiny 19th century French locomotives.
Today there are still several different track sizes and more than 4,000 steam locomotives on over 37,000 miles of tracks. From the windows of these crowded Indian trains we catch glimpses of both palaces and severe poverty while passing through the exotic countryside. An additional special treat for steam locomotive fans is a portrait of the Nilagiri Railroad which - laboring under full steam - fights its way to the top of an incredibly beautiful mountain landscape.
